Dangerous gas work can be deadly. Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause the following gas safety risks:
carbon monoxide poisoning
Top Tips for Gas Safety
£90 for Gas Safety Inspection (up to 2 appliances).
+ £40 for any GAS FIRE to inspect.
Only use a gas safe engineer to fit, fix or service your gas appliances,
gas boiler, gas fire, gas cooker or hob
central heating system, radiators or your hot water system, if they are connected to either a Natural Gas or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) supply
Always check the engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card. All Gas Safe Registered (former CORGI) engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card, with their own unique licence number, showing the type of work they are qualified to do.
Get your appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year, or in accordance with your manufacturer's guidelines, by a Gas Safe Registered (former CORGI) engineer.
Your Gas Safe Registered (former CORGI) engineer will carry out tests and checks to establish your appliances are operating safely. Where an appliance or pipework has been installed in an unsafe way, or is operating unsafely and the engineer can not rectify the situation immediately, they will follow the guidance outlined in the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP) to make the installation safe. This is the industry accepted document for guiding engineers on dealing with unsafe situations.
Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm. An alarm will alert you to the presence of the poisonous gas carbon monoxide, produced by unsafe gas appliances. Make sure you know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
If you think there might be a gas leak or notice any signs of carbon monoxide, act fast and follow the advice for gas emergencies.
Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, make sure you understand the laws about gas safety. Running a property can be a stressful business. But are you aware of your legal gas safety duties as a landlord? Every year, landlords are conned by illegal gas workers who perform poor gas work, causing serious illness and death of tenants. And if it’s your property, it’s your responsibility.
Gas Safety for Students
What are the gas safety risks of dangerous gas work?
Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers registered to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. It has replaced CORGI registration. We take it for granted that our boilers, cookers and gas fires are safe. It is only when there is a problem with an appliance that many people take any notice of it at all.
Students, be aware of your rights! Student accommodation can be great fun, but to avoid gas dangers that could kill you, ask to see your landlord’s gas safety record. By law, your landlord must be able to show you their landlord’s gas safety record to ensure the safety of you and your housemates. The great news is it won’t cost you a penny and it could save your life!
A Landlord’s Gas Safety Duties – What You Should Know
Being a tenant means there’s always a landlord responsible for the gas appliances. But when was the last time you asked to see your landlord’s? If it hasn’t been updated within the last year, you could be in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. Illegal gas workers are renowned for conning landlords with unsafe gas work, resulting in serious illness and even death.
